We start our journey from the picturesque town of Matelica, a place steeped in history, with historical evidence dating back to prehistoric times. These historical imprints are still visible today in the preserved monuments within the town's walls. Among the many monuments, we must mention the numerous churches, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its impressive bell tower, located in the heart of the town. Our bike itinerary will take us through charming country lanes, allowing us to explore beautiful places and villages that seem frozen in time. In these areas, the traditions of farming and the hard work of the land have left an indelible mark on the landscape, resembling the brushstrokes of the greatest impressionist painters in history.
The continuous ups and downs will only enhance our journey. During our ride, we'll make a stop at the must-visit Castle Lanciano. Continuing on, we'll encounter an uphill stretch that will lead us to the historic center of Pioraco, a small village located along the Potenza River. In Pioraco, water plays a vital role. The town is known for paper production, and numerous rivers and streams run through the village, creating a captivating and picturesque landscape. Pioraco's gorge, with its watercourses, is particularly interesting, and one of the main attractions is the "Li Vurgacci" trail. Over many years of natural erosion, the waters of the Potenza River have sculpted waterfalls, pools, and gorges, creating a magical environment where the "Li Vurgacci" trail begins. We also recommend a visit to the Paper Museum to delve deeper into the history of this local tradition.
We continue along the beautiful cycle path that follows the Potenza River, reaching Fiuminata and then taking the valley road between Mount Gemmo and Mount Corsegno, which will lead us back to Matelica after traversing an area of undeniable environmental value.
