Piazza della Libertà is regarded as one of the most important places of Tolentino's historic center. Most people know it houses the Clock Tower, built during the 16th century, but visitors also appreciate the buildings overlooking the square. Among these, Palazzo del Comune and its mighty portico is a must see. The facade is divided into three levels: the lower one is characterized by five arches surmounted by a balcony. The building was probably designed by Emilio Pallotta; the interiors are frescoed by Giuseppe Lucatelli.
Palazzo Massi Porcelli, built between 1904 and 1906 on a project by Roberto Gullini, also dominates the square; its facade is embellished with terracotta decorations made by Umbrian artist A. Biscarini of Perugia.
Finally, Palazzo Sangallo deserves mention, too. Originally known as Palazzo Parisani, the structure is named after its designer Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. Construction works started in 1516 but it was only completed in 1932 by Stefano Gentiloni Silverj.
Since 1970, the building has housed the MIUMOR - International Museum of Humor in Art.
