The Basilica-Sanctuary of San Nicola of Tolentino is characterized by mystical and religious grandeur. Saint Nicholas, who was assigned to the Augustinian Convent of Tolentino as a young boy in 1275, is a symbol of tradition and devotion. Originally from Sant'Angelo in Pontano delle Marche, the saint lived his life in Tolentino and turned into a destination for pilgrimages. Patron of the souls in Purgatory, devotion towards Saint Nicholas of Tolentino is still particularly strong both at a national and international level. Reverence to the saint has spread over time thanks to some episodes of great value: above all, the miracle he made by offering bread to the poor, who then were cured from their insurmountable sickness, and the miracle of the saint's arms that, after being separated from his dead body, began to gush blood.
The Basilica is appreciated for its Gothic architecture and for the Cappellone of San Nicola, a large chapel placed on the northeast side of the cloister and decorated with frescoes; here lies the body of the Saint.
Osteria San Nicola, also named after the Saint, is located near the Basilica and it is known for its traditional and authentic cuisine.
