The ancient Fonte San Giovanni can be found near the historic center of Tolentino. It dates back to the 15th century and it is one of the oldest public fountains of the town along with Fonte Contra, which still boasts its original water pipelines. In the past, it was also known with the name of 'fountain of women', probably an allusion to the function of a public washroom for ladies. Although it was built just outside the city walls, the monument is identified in the historical land registry as integral part of the central urban plan. It occupies the ancient perimeter of a rustic villa and, during the 15th century, a brick kiln was built near the fountain in order to use its water for the factories. Over time, the people of Tolentino took care of keeping the waters of Fonte San Giovanni clean while adding more elements: notably, the three pools still visible today, three spouts and the road connecting the spring to Porta da Capo were built. The last restoration dates back to 2016.
