The Abbey of San Claudio is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the Marche region (8th century AD). Set in the Chienti Valley, near the Roman site of Pausolae, it is dedicated to Saint Claudius, as suggested by the frescoes in the lower chapel.
The reason for its construction is uncertain: although some scholars have pointed out its Greek-cross plan, the Abbey was recognized as a rare example of a two-level palatine chapel in 2006, thanks to its imposing walls and the towers of the westwork.
This unique feature has fueled fascinating hypotheses including one that considers the Abbey as the ancient Palatine Chapel of Aachen, founded by Charlemagne. Could this austere church really hide such a mysterious and overwhelming truth?
Curious cyclists who want to learn more about the church can contact the 'Centro Studi G. Carnevale' (+39 3473316605) that has been researching on the matter for years.
The info point for cyclists is located in front of the Abbey, while Bar San Claudio is just a few meters away. For those who wish, it is possible to book a room at Hotel San Claudio and the restaurant service is guaranteed by Ristorante San Claudio, known throughout the province for its ‘fritto marchigiano’.
